 Your Road Test

Your Road Test Course Options

Your road test must be scheduled in advance at a designated Minnesota Exam Center. Currently, walk-in tests are NOT allowed.

There are two types of road test exam stations in Minnesota: closed and open courses.

CLOSED CIRCUIT COURSES: There are three designated closed circuit course exam stations in the Twin Cities Metro area that are substantially similar in design: Arden Hills, Plymouth, and Eagan. Closed circuit courses were designed and created specifically for road tests and are not conducted on ordinary public roadways. The roadways on these courses are designed to appear and operate like ordinary public roadways, however. Traffic is generally limited to vehicles entering and exiting the site. Practice driving is not allowed.

OPEN COURSES: Open course exam stations are typically conducted on regular city streets among normal traffic. The open courses are located in cities/towns such as Anoka, Stillwater, Chaska, Hastings, Cambridge and elsewhere in greater Minnesota.

Where you take your road test is up to you. There are pros and cons for open courses and closed circuit courses. Speak to your driving instructor about each type.

Helpful Hint:
DPS has recently been experiencing long wait times at road test sites, often several weeks or months! Therefore, we recommend that you immediately visit the DPS website to schedule your road test. After scheduling, you may regularly recheck their website to see if any earlier dates open up. This strategy is often successful. NOTE:  You will not lose your existing road test date unless you choose to save the new date that is available.
If you simply need a car to take your road test in, please contact us! We can provide you with a driver and vehicle, assuming we have one available on the date/time of your road test. Our driver will pick you up from the location of your choice and take you to your road test. Upon completion, you will be delivered back to the location of your choice. It's that easy! The fee for this service starts at $115, assuming your pick-up/drop-off location, and exam site, is within our normal service area (northern metro). Additional fees will apply for travel required outside of our normal service area or outside of our normal business hours (M-F, 8:30am-4:30pm). No training is provided with this service.  Our goal is to make your road test experience go as smooth as possible!

PLEASE NOTE:  Wait times to apply for your license after passing your road test is unpredictable and can be quite long! Your driver might not have time to wait if he/she has another client following your road test. Discuss your options with your driver before your road test. Pre-applying for your driver's license on the DPS website may make your wait time a bit shorter.

Click here to be directed to the Department of Public Safety (DPS) website to schedule your road test or to pre-apply for your driver's license.

There may be a charge from DPS if you do not keep your scheduled road test appointment. Be sure to go to the DPS website to cancel in a timely manner if you cannot keep your scheduled date and time.

Please plan at least 2.5 hours for travel to/from metro exam stations, including wait time for your road test. We have no control over how long your experience at the exam station might be.

IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO MAKE SURE THAT YOU BRING ALL DOCUMENTATION REQUIRED BY THE DPS FOR TAKING YOUR ROAD TEST. THERE IS NO REFUND IF YOU CANNOT TAKE YOUR ROAD TEST DUE TO LACK OF PROPER DOCUMENTATION. KEN'S DRIVING WILL PROVIDE PROOF OF INSURANCE AT THE EXAM STATION.
